Dowlais secure their position in the Welsh Indoor Finals by winning all 3 matches so far in the league.
Dowlais beat Penarth 2nds 5-3 with goals from Janine Thomas(3) and Suzanne Jones (2) and then went on to beat Bridgend 2-1 with another 2 goals from Suzanne Jones. In their third match Jane Antony proceed in great form in her new position at left back and even managed a goal in their 2-1 win over Cardiff Athletic joining Jones once again on the score sheet.
League leaders Swansea were Dowlais` next opponents and although the score line and goal difference would matter in the league stage Swansea had decided not to take part in the Finals therefore Dowlais had already qualified. Swansea won the match 7-1 with Dowlais`s goal coming from man of the match Jane Antony once again.
Dowlais are to face current Indoor Champions Howardians and Penarth 1sts on Saturday January 31st in Merthyr Leisure Centre with the finals being held at the same venue on Sunday February 8th.
WELL DONE.
Young Welsh Umpires Impress at UK Schools Games
The WHUA and WHU’s new young umpire development programme started to bear fruit at last month’s UK School Games in Bath/ Bristol, when 5 members of this fast track development programme acquitted themselves very well. Carolyn Llewellyn (WHUA South Wales Development Officer) reports:
“Five young umpires/officials aged 15 – 19 travelled to University of West of England, Bristol for the weekend at the end of August. Katie Perry (Howardians) and Jack Walford (Whitchurch) umpired U17 teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Ulster. Alix Dickinson (Abergavenny), Zoe Kent (Dowlais) and Ben Thomas (Bridgend) were judges for all three days.
They had an absolutely superb time; meeting people from all over the UK and enjoying the 'Olympic Village style' atmosphere. They were entertained, fed, watered and clothed and the experience they gained was immense with lots of advice and guidance off a top class umpires manager and tournament director.
They had all been attending a fast-track umpiring/officials coaching programme throughout the summer, together with Natalie Lineham (Howardians) and are all now Level 1 umpires. Some of them hadn’t even picked up a whistle before this May! They are being coached for International standard, so in a few years’ time (or even sooner) they will be umpiring and officiating at high profile tournaments both here and abroad. GOOD LUCK to them all."
The WHUA and WHU are still looking to recruit many more aspiring umpires and officials to this programme so please contact Carolyn Llewellyn (South Wales) or Ann Houlston (North Wales) for more information.

| Thomas celebrates Olympics call |
Sarah Thomas is Beijing-bound. | Welsh hockey player Sarah Thomas has been picked for the Beijing Olympics. Merthyr Tydfil-bred Thomas will be the third Welsh female and first outfield player to represent Great Britain at an Olympic Games. Thomas, who plays for Rotterdam, said: "I'm over the moon. I don't think it's actually sunk in yet but it's going to be absolutely fantastic." Thomas started her hockey career at Vaynor and Penderyn School and has played for Dowlais and Swansea Ladies. The last time Wales was represented in the women's squad was in Barcelona in 1992 when goalkeeper Helen Morgan assisted the team to a bronze medal when Thomas was 11. After studying for a degree in sports science at Exeter University, the midfield/forward player joined Rotterdam where she was named 2007 club player of the year.
